A technology unique to St. Rita's in the region is the Colorectal Ultrasound Probe which provides outstanding images for the diagnosis and staging of colorectal cancer. The colon (large intestine) and the rectum (last segment of the colon) are part of the digestive system, sometimes referred to as the GI system. Cancers are named for the part of the body they affect, so colorectal cancer refers to cancer of the colon and rectum.
The colorectal ultrasound probe is used as a diagnostic procedure to determine the stage of a tumor or cancer. This procedure can help identify the depth of the cancer and assess whether it affects surrounding tissues.
If you are scheduled to receive the colorectal ultrasound probe, you will receive instructions about colonic cleansing and dietary restrictions prior to the procedure. On the day of the test, a probe is gently inserted into the rectum (first few inches of the colon) and high frequency sound waves (ultrasound waves) are generated. The pattern of echoes as they bounce off tissues is converted into a 'picture.' Board certified radiologists promptly read the test results. The results will be phoned, faxed, mailed or delivered electronically to the referring physician. He or she will share the results with you.
