New MRI Equipment Gives Better Images

St. Rita's Medical Center is home to the region's most powerful imaging equipment, the 3 Tesla MRI (magnetic resonance imaging). The 3 Tesla MRI, referred to as the 3T MRI, produces scans faster and with higher resolution. This means that patients spend less time during the scanning process or in the magnetic tunnel. The 3T MRI's higher resolution produces images that are more detailed, which is especially helpful in detecting neurological or brain disorders, problems in the neck or spine or within joints, and for in depth vascular studies for patients experiencing blood flow problems. In the future, 3T MRI testing will include imaging the heart and giving complete "pictures" of the heart when it's pumping.

According to Brian Nye, Director of Radiology at St. Rita's, "This new technology is already helping some patients by giving their physicians better images and ultimately detecting the cause of their health problems." Nye reports that 4,000 to 5,000 3T MRI tests are performed each year at St. Rita's and that new and better uses of this sophisticated technology constantly evolve.
