Joint Health Educational Program
Goes on the Road

In effort to educate the public about joint health issues, St. Rita's Orthopedic Care Managers are taking the message to area community groups through outreach educational programs. In small group sessions, St. Rita's certified orthopedic nurses share information about the anatomy of the body's large joints, including the hip, knee, and shoulder. They discuss why these joints are so important and how wear or injury to the body's large joints can make doing even simple things, like walking or getting up from a chair, painful and frustrating. For some victims of hip or knee disorders, just standing still may cause pain. Participants learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of joint damage, treatment options, including joint replacement, and why seeking medical help is important to their quality of life.

According to Peg McClellan, RN, ONC, and Care Manger at St. Rita's, "People need to know that joint problems can build up over time causing stiffness and pain that limits their daily activity. We want the public to know that joint disorders are not just problems of normal aging, but can occur any age, and that help is available. Our goal is to encourage people to seek medical attention, receive therapy or treatments and ultimately participate in life more fully."
