St. Rita's Medical Center maintains a hazardous materials decontamination
facility within its Emergency Department. The facility is accessed directly
from the outside and is capable of decontaminating five stretcher-borne or
ambulatory individuals at one time. The facility can decontaminate up to 50
patients per hour, depending upon the level of contamination. The facility
uses a separate air supply from the hospital and water run-off is controlled
and then filtered. Specially trained staff wearing Level B personal protective
equipment assists with the decontamination process. These staff members using
special communications devices, can monitor victims, begin treatments and request
support from the staff in the "clean" area of the department. Decontaminated
patients then enter directly into the Emergency Department.
