Mended Hearts is a national non-profit organization offering hope and encouragement
to heart patients, their families and caregivers. Mended Hearts volunteers
visit patients in the hospital offering reassurance and sharing personal experiences
about their heart disease, treatment and recovery. Volunteers also visit family
members and caregivers. In addition to visitation programs, Mended Hearts offers
support group meetings and educational forums. Support groups help people understand
that there can be a rich, rewarding life after heart disease.
The Mended Hearts group meets at 7:00 p.m. the first Tuesday of each month,
excluding the months of July and August. Meeting sites alternate between St.
Rita's Medical Center and Lima Memorial Hospital . St. Rita's hosts the meetings
in January, March, May, September and November in Rooms #1 & #2 in the
Auxiliary Conference Center, 718 West Market, Lima, Ohio. Nutritious refreshments
are always served at the meetings.
Open-heart patients, their family members and caregivers are invited to attend
this free support group. The group also welcomes patients with other types
of heart disorders. During the meetings, participants will hear information
on a variety of subject areas followed by a chapter meeting. Topic areas may
include:
- Diet
- Exercise
- Cholesterol Information
- Specifics About Heart Disorders and Other Heart Related Issues
Presenters are physicians, nurses and other allied health team members. The
current chapter president is retired physician, Dr. Robert Biggs. Those interested
in becoming volunteers and/or joining the National Mended Hearts group may
ask the details at the support group meetings.
