A massage therapist uses his/her hands and/or other body techniques to promote the
health and well being of a patient?s muscles and soft tissues. A massage therapist
uses manual techniques to stimulate nerve receptors and blood flow within the body,
which increases circulation. This increased circulation helps to take away wastes
within the blood and supplies nutrients (such as oxygen) to the cells at a faster
rate. The overall treatment has a very positive effect on an individual?s mind,
body and spirit. Massage therapists work in a variety of settings to include their
homes, client?s homes, physician offices, rehabilitation centers, wellness centers,
and chiropractor offices.
In terms of education, the state of Ohio requires individuals to be a graduate of
a state approved massage therapy program that has a minimum of 600 hours of
education. It is recommended that individuals enroll in a massage therapy program
that is accredited by nationally recognized organization such as the Commission on
Massage Therapy Accreditation. After education is complete, an individual
must pass a state examination given by the
The State Medical Board of Ohio in order to be a licensed massage therapist.
Individuals may also be required to become certified by passing an examination given by a
nationally recognized organization such as the National Certification Board for
Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.
