Health Information Administrator

Summary
A health information administrator (also referred to as a medical records administrator) is responsible for the overall management of the medical information system(s) within a facility. A person with this position must be able to develop and implement information systems that allow for the confidential recording, retrieval, and retention of patient medical records. A health information administrator will also be called upon to develop statistical information from medical records for a variety of reasons such as cost-saving research projects or for legal purposes. Administrators are often responsible for training and supervising others within a health information or medical records department. This career is an optimal one for an individual who is interested in combining interests in both healthcare and technology. Job placement opportunities for health information administrators are broad and include hospitals, physician offices, HMO?s, nursing homes, research firms, vendors, etc.

Educational Requirements and Resources
In terms of education, this position requires a bachelor?s degree from an accredited health information management program. After the education process is complete, individuals will want to become certified by passing an examination given by a nationally recognized organization such as the American Health Information Management Association. After certification, individuals are referred to as registered health information administrators (RHIA).
