Child Obesity
Healthy Eating and Exercise Program


Adults know that weight management can be a challenge; and it can be especially difficult for a child. That's why St. Rita's has a special program, the Healthy Eating and Exercise Program for Kids. This weight management program designed for children ages seven to 17 and their parents, teaches children to make healthy food choices while increasing physical activity. Learning is fun-filled with participant and parent involvement.

A team of caring professionals including a:

  • Registered Nurse
  • Dietician
  • Exercise Physiologist
  • Psychologist

This team meets weekly with the child and parents to help develop the best program for them. The program focuses on food choices or nutrition, physical activity and supportive communication skills.

Nutrition
Nutrition is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Our registered dietician will teach kids and their parents how to make healthy food choices and how to make their favorite dishes lower in calories. Nutrition discussions and activities cover:

Nutrition
  • Grocery Shopping Tours
  • Monthly Cooking Demonstrations
  • Playing Games about the Food Models
  • Learning about the Food Pyramid
  • Learning How to Keep Weekly Food Records
Physical Awareness
An exercise physiologist will teach kids and parents how to be more active. Each week an activity will be introduced and demonstrated. Kids and parents will be advised on how to incorporate activities into their daily lifestyles. Physical awareness includes:

  • Obstacle Courses
  • Exercise Ideas to Perform at Home
  • Instructions on How to Keep Home Exercise Logs
Support Group
A clinical psychologist will teach parents how to be supportive through praise and encouragement. Skills will be taught on how to improve communication skills and create a positive home environment. Topics include:

  • Changing Negative Habits
  • Combating Negative Thinking
  • Time Management
  • Body Image
  • Breaking the Behavior
  • Health Bingo
  • Ask-the-Expert
  • Dealing with Discouragement and Goal Setting
This program is held every Tuesday evening for six months, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Outpatient Building , St. Rita's Medical Center at 718 W. Market Street, Lima, Ohio.

Classes start February 3, 2004.

Who should attend?
Children age seven to 17 and their parents/guardians who are dedicated to learn and implement a lifetime goal of weight loss through healthy lifestyle changes.
