Geriatric

In some cases, older adults have a psychiatric condition that requires hospitalization and medical care. The recently opened Geriatric Psychiatry Unit is specially designed for older adults experiencing serious difficulties with depression, dementia or conditions such as delirium. Treatment in the unit is directed by psychiatrists experienced in geriatric care while family physicians or other medical specialists address any existing medical conditions. An experienced team of nurses, geriatric social workers and psychiatric occupational therapists deliver individualized patient care and ongoing family support. This program works to strengthen the older adult's physical health while enhancing their self-esteem and decreasing the emotional suffering caused by their mental illness. The program also assists the patient and their family in coping with the challenges of aging.
